Clean Energy is North America's leading provider of natural gas fuel for transportation, and a global leader in expanding international natural gas vehicle markets. With experience and expertise built over more than a decade, we are committed to helping our customers -- companies operating all kinds of fleets from the goods movement sector, to refuse and public transit, to shuttles and taxi fleets -- gain the measurable economic and environmental advantages of natural gas fueling. We have more than 1000 employees and are continuing to expand our 500+ station portfolio.

The Requirements

To meet the basic qualifications for this role you will have:
  • Legal authorization to work permanently in the U.S. for any employer without requiring visa transfer or visa sponsorship.

At a minimum you will need:
  • 6-9 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Well-developed electrical and mechanical abilities and a strong understanding of how things work and operate together in a process flow environment.
  • The demonstrated ability to diagnose and repair electrical problems such as current overloads, ground faults, open circuits and faulty relay logic and the ability to read and understand electrical and mechanical drawings.

  • Computer knowledge, especially using service software and Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability and willingness to create detailed documentation.
  • Your own tools, a well-developed professional Technician style set 1 ½" and less equipped to work on a combination of mechanical and electrical equipment. Examples of tools but not limited to: wrenches/sockets/Allen wrenches/pliers/pipe wrench/large adjustable wrenches, electrical test meter, electrical screwdrivers, torque wrenches etc.
  • An acceptable or insurable driving record.

  • A home neighborhood/environment safe and secure enough to park a fully stocked company truck.
Preferred but not required:
  • PLC experience with demonstrated ability in component replacement and diagnosis is highly preferred.
  • The practiced skill of diagnosing and repairing mechanical problems on high-pressure gas/air systems is a plus.
  • Modern automotive or diesel repair experience with expertise in mechanical and on board electrical diagnostic systems is a plus.
Key competencies:
  • Interpersonal and customer service skills -- the talent to effectively interact with customers, acting as a strong representative for Clean Energy, building client relationships, and responding to requests in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Client communication abilities -- the skill and talent to take highly technical information, translate it and then present it to customers in easily understandable terms.
  • Language and communication skills -- the ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos, write simple correspondence, and effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other Clean Energy employees.

You will work a Monday through Friday day shift, typically 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition, you'll need to be flexible and open to working as part of a 24/7 on-call rotation. Overnight travel is approximately 30% and you will travel to Denver, Colorado for training.

The Role

As a Service Technician III, you will inspect, maintain and complete repairs on CNG and/or LNG fueling equipment. While you'll take ownership of your responsibilities, you'll also work as part of a strong team and have support when you need it. We will tap your more advanced experience to mentor Level I and Level II Service Techs, assigning work and answering questions.

What it's like to do this job

Reporting to the Operations Supervisor, you will be based out of Dallas and covering Houston, Louisiana and Mississippi and some of Dallas. You are the "eyes and ears" in your assigned area. Your supervisor has a hands off style but will rely on you to keep him aware of what's going on in the field. We will look to you to lead a team of 5-8 technicians for whom you will be the "go to" for issues they can't resolve on their own; you are always a phone call away. Although you will be in the office a few times a week the majority of your time will be spent out in the field. Overnight travel is approximately 30%.

While onsite you will do everything from identifying and repairing mechanical and electrical corrective service orders identified during inspections to fulfilling preventative maintenance service orders or escalated service orders from Service Techs I and II on CNG / LNG equipment. You will also lead major overhauls, rebuilds and startups, with the support of other Service Techs, and with minimal supervision.

The role also requires a good deal of paperwork (primarily on a computer), so you will spend time working in MS Excel and Word.

The work you will do breaks down into these three areas:

Electrical
  • Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, repair or replace electrical equipment such as but not limited to electrical wiring, conduit, panels, switch gear, switches, gauges, transducers, solenoids, gas dryers, actuators, motors, meters, frequency drives and controls for safe and proper operating condition.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical problems such as current overloads, ground faults, open circuits and faulty relay logic.
  • Monitor, check and correct phase imbalances, current draw, low voltage power supplies, pressure transmitters, relay logic and programmable logic control operation.
Mechanical
  • Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, repair or replace mechanical CNG / LNG equipment such as but not limited to, compressors pumps, engines, intercoolers, after coolers, heat exchangers, piping, tubing, fittings, filters, traps, gas dryers, fasteners, valves and actuators for safe and proper operating condition.
  • Diagnose and repair such mechanical problems as high and low pressure gas flow restrictions, interstage gas compressor temperatures and pressures, pressure regulator variance.
  • Monitor, interpret, check and correct operational trends in reciprocating and screw type gas compressors.
General
  • Repair, replace, and adjust malfunctioning equipment to restore proper operating condition specified in regulations and repair manuals.
  • You may be called on to perform periodic inspections of fueling stations including all equipment to determine proper and normal operating conditions.
  • Check and record operational data such as fluid levels, temperatures and pressures, compare to trends and have the ability to make corrections as needed.
  • Detect and correct faulty and malfunctioning mechanical and electrical components, devices and equipment related to "Compressed Natural Gas" (CNG), "Liquefied Natural Gas" (LNG) and "Hydrogen" fueling equipment.
  • Keep fueling locations clean by: picking up trash, emptying trash cans and dumpsters, painting, hand cleaning and polishing fueling equipment. Oversee maintainenance of the canopy, lot, islands, surrounding landscaping, in and outside of enclosures.
  • Update and document all activity, service orders, work performed and recommendation in our Field Service Automation software.
  • Install, remove and modify fueling station equipment as assigned by supervisor.
  • Maintain all fueling station equipment and structures in accordance with manufacturers and Clean Energy guidelines.
  • Assume lead responsibilities when called upon.
Note: this description is intended to give you a general overview of the position and is not an exhaustive listing of duties and responsibilities.

Why Clean Energy

Strong training -- you bring strong learning acumen and a great attitude and we'll provide the tools you need to succeed. The first few weeks you'll travel with the Operations Supervisor who will introduce you around your assigned area, show you the scope of the position and help you learn your assignment. Within the first few months, you'll also travel to Denver to attend a two-week group training session. And of course, you'll have your teammates who can also answer questions as you are becoming acclimated.

Career growth potential -- there are plenty of opportunities and growth options for our strong players. You might choose to pursue the traditional path to a Senior Service Tech, move sideways into a Commissioning Tech role for opening new stations, or even pursue a degree focused on engineering or operations positions. With strong performance, talents and interest, you can chart the direction of your career.

Green standard for sustainability -- you probably already knew that natural gas burns much more cleanly than gasoline and diesel, producing significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions. But did you also know that natural gas is increasingly renewable, using biomethane reclaimed from landfill via waste-to-energy solutions? Clean Energy is helping companies and public organizations meet aggressive environmental goals.

Proven strong leadership -- you will join a team of accomplished, seasoned professionals at Clean Energy, led by Andrew Littlefair. Mr. Littlefair served as President of Pickens Fuel Corp (PFC), predecessor company of Clean Energy, which he co-founded in 1997 with Boone Pickens and was Staff Assistant to then President Ronald Reagan in the Office of Presidential Advance from 1983 to 1987. Our executive team's profiles can be viewed at CleanEnergyFuels.com.

The right solutions -- as more organizations explore alternative fuel vehicles, Clean Energy offers the right solutions at the right time. Nearly 14 million natural gas vehicles are on the road throughout the world, but only about 117,000 are in the U.S., according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Clean Energy is actively changing that statistic by building an infrastructure of commercial fueling stations, as well as building a portfolio of subsidiary, like-minded companies to drive success.

Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive wage, we offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental and other insurances, a 401(k) plan with discretionary company match, paid time off and more. You'll also receive a company truck, which you'll fuel at your stations, a cell phone and uniform.

Keys to Success

To qualify and find success in this role, you'll need to be a total package person -- have the technical prowess, a commitment to safety, strong analytical skills, and customer service savvy. Your supervisor, as previously mentioned is not a micro-manager; he's very hands off. He will put his full trust and faith in you to get the job done and keep him informed. Keeping that trust is important.

To be the total package person we seek, you should also have these key competencies:

Strong sense of urgency -- a customer centric attitude and sense of urgency in protecting the client's and Clean Energy's interests. Compressors are on an auto-call system and if there's a problem, response must be immediate.

A "do what it takes" attitude -- you should be hard-working, dedicated, and present Clean Energy in the best light possible. Attitude is always important.
