The Role

Reporting to the Supervisor, Engineering, as Controls Design Engineer, you will play an essential role on the Engineering and Construction team, serving as our sole Controls Design Engineer. On a daily basis, you will design, develop, and draft control engineering systems for fueling stations, including electrical power systems, and ensure that these systems and processes operate safely, effectively and efficiently.

The vast majority of your work will support customer-owned CNG stations but you may also design control systems for new or modified LNG fueling stations. You could work on less complex CNG Fast Fill or Time Fill designs, but for the most part, you’ll focus on complex stations with complex control systems, built to both Clean Energy's and customer-owner's specifications. You can expect to have multiple projects (typically 4-5) in different phases (i.e. design and development; review, permitting, QA/QC; construction) underway simultaneously.

More specifically, you will:
  • Develop control systems for CNG fueling facilities, including compressor and dispensing controls, data communication, fuel management systems and interface with SCADA.  Quick question for you - click here
  • Produce instrumentation drawings, single line diagrams and electrical load schedules, develop block-wiring, ladder logic, and P&ID and termination diagrams.
  • Work with equipment suppliers to properly specify and manufacture equipment in compliance with corporate standards and best industry practices.
  • Set best practices and standards for design of electrical equipment, including mounting, component selection for, and layout of control panels.
  • Inspect purchased sub-assemblies and equipment for workmanship and compliance with specifications.
  • Provide technical guidance to less experienced engineering, design, and drafting personnel.
  • Facilitate and help coordinate activities of others to ensure that control system installations and operations conform to specifications.
  • Coordinate work of consultants and vendors.
  • Prepare status and progress project reports for the Manager of Engineering and company management.
  • Advise management regarding engineering problems and recommend ways to solve them.
  • Work closely with management and colleagues to maintain and improve the quality of our design drawings.
Keys to Success

We operate in a high-energy, high-expectations environment where you'll enjoy the autonomy to do your work with minimal supervision, as long as you deliver quality and accurate control system designs on-time and follow your work through all project phases. To be successful in our culture, you'll be self-motivated, ready to engage and have an upbeat attitude. You'll need a sense of urgency, follow-through, and a desire to learn and contribute. Flexibility will be important because change is constant. Your communication skills must also be strong as you work effectively across functions, interact with an array of stakeholders, and work to break down silos and understand what other departments need. In addition, you will need:
  • A passion for the work and a self-starter, proactive approach
  • An unwavering commitment to safety
  • The talent to excel in a fast-moving, deadline-driven environment
  • Strong organizational and time management skills

More Good Reasons

Impact and opportunity
You will find there are plenty of opportunities for growth in the role and expansion of your career as the company continues on its strong growth path. Prove yourself a star in this highly visible role and your efforts won't go unnoticed. We take pride in helping our team members take their careers to the next level, learn new skills and develop professionally.

Green standard for sustainability
You probably already knew that natural gas burns much more cleanly than gasoline and diesel, producing significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions. But did you also know that natural gas is increasingly renewable, using biomethane reclaimed from landfill via waste-to-energy solutions? Clean Energy is helping companies and public organizations meet aggressive environmental goals.

Proven strong leadership
You will join a team of accomplished, seasoned professionals at Clean Energy, led by Andrew Littlefair. Mr. Littlefair served as President of Pickens Fuel Corp (PFC), predecessor company of Clean Energy, which he co-founded in 1997 with Boone Pickens and was Staff Assistant to then President Ronald Reagan in the Office of Presidential Advance from 1983 to 1987.

Solid growth
Clean Energy has the right solutions at the right time, as more and more organizations are exploring alternative fuel vehicles and solutions. For instance, we recently entered into an agreement with UPS to provide them with 170 million gallon equivalents of Redeem renewable natural gas (RNG) through 2026. Clean Energy's Redeem is the world’s first renewable fuel made entirely from organic waste for commercial vehicles, and this partnership with UPS will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 1 million metric tons.

Excellent compensation
In addition to a competitive wage and discretionary performance-based bonus potential, we offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental and other insurances, a 401(k) plan with discretionary company match, paid time off and more.
